Parts of a Domain Name
By breaking down the various sections of a domain name we can learn the heirarchal structure and how each part effects the name as a whole.
If you use the internet or email, chances are you have many different domain names stored in your head. Some you use may look similar to the following:
www.netscape.net mail.yahoo.com www.wsu.edu www.espn.tv
Take a look at the examples above. By exploring the differences we can learn the parts of a domain name, and how each part affects the overall name. There are generally three parts to a domain name: the top level domain, second level domain, and subsequent level domains usually just called subdomains. These parts are divided by a period, or 'dot' as it is called.
